Letting skills stagnate is the worst thing anyone on a solid career path can do to themselves. It is not enough to rely on lessons learned years ago in college. Life is about change, and nothing, not even a job, is immune to that fact. Someone who takes the plunge into continuing education keeps their mind facile, and their skills polished.

Once upon a time, an employee stayed at their job post for 25 to 30 years or more, usually retiring from the same company they started at. Those days are long gone, especially with corporations constantly looking to cut costs in favor of their bottom lines. The moment an employee becomes too burdensome, out they go.

That scenario doesn’t always need to happen. Engaging in continuing education turns an employee into a valuable resource for the company. Knowledge is truly power in these situations. And in the situation that the company still lets an employee go, the employee has an ace up their sleeve with education.

Being able to show to a current or potential employer a laundry list of classes and seminars lifts your resume’ out of the stack. Understanding the recent changes to a specific job description gives you an advantage over someone who hasn’t bothered to learn more. While it may feel like constant schooling eats up time, the trade-off is more than worth it. Higher salaries, frequent promotions and job security are just a few of the advantages. Applying your new skills to your job is a priceless feeling.
